Hawaii Cops Deserve Better

I was riding through Windward side and low and behold, I came upon a protest at an intersection.  Mostly young people, teens, twenties, and thirties maybe.  It was a defund the police rally.  I saw posters claiming that we are in a fascist state run by the police.  It is true that we are in a fascist state, but it is not run by the police.  Our fascist state is run by the Democrats and the unions.  The young people out on the sidewalk today, are the Democrats and the union’s unwitting brown shirted storm troopers.  Defunding the police is their Beer Hall Putsch.

Only the other side of the street, I saw cops parked.  A lot of them.  I saw them moving briskly with purposes.  Some looked concerned.  One of them was a female police officer.  For some reason, I wondered if she had kids at home and who was watching them?  She and her colleagues probably did not wake up today thinking that they were going to have to watch a rally held against them.  I am certain they are tough and can take it.

What ever happened to being innocent until proven guilty?  Have we degenerated back to the days the French Revolution where the guillotine is going to be brought back out next?  When there are purges and lawlessness the likes to which the protestors today likely envision, societies typically do not recover or someone far more sinister takes their place.  If you doubt me, ask any Nazi, Communist, Taliban, or Klansman to tell you how, when, and why their organizations began.  There are no Nazis, Taliban, nor Klansman here in Hawaii but there more than a few Communists.  Those sinister organizations arose from chaos.

Let’s take a look at some of the one of the most chaotic cities in the United States.  This city is also led by Defund the Police Democrats.  Chicago.  After three years of falling homicide totals, 2020 ended with 769 homicides — 274 more than the previous year and the most since the 784 homicides in 2016. The latest shooting victim figures with the year ending with 4,033 shooting victims compared with 2,598 the year before.  Chicago’s population is roughly 2.71 million, double the size of Hawaii.

Since 2001, 7,057 American service members have been killed in combat in Afghanistan and Iraq.  20 years of combat.  At 700 murders per year, Chicago will equal that number in 10 years.

There is a far sadder number.  Since 9/11, four times as many U.S. service members and veterans have died by suicide than have been killed in combat, according to a new report. The research, compiled by the Costs of War Project at Brown University, found an estimated 30,177 active-duty personnel and veterans who have served in the military since 9/11 have died by suicide, compared with 7,057 killed in post 9/11 military operations. The figures include all service members, not just those who served in combat during that time.

The trend of veteran’s deaths is deeply alarming.  The increasing rates of suicide for both veterans and active-duty personnel are outpacing those of the general population, marking a significant shift.

This shift is being seen in our police officers too. Numbers released by Blue H.E.L.P. in January of 2020 showed that in 2019, 228 American police officers died by suicide. That research showed an increase from a study done by The Ruderman Family Foundation released in 2018. That study showed that in 2017, while 129 officers died in the line of duty, 140 died by suicide.

Hawaii has one of the 20largest police department in the United States.  Every day we send officers out on the streets to face the unexpected.  We expect them to act with restraint I some cases and we expect them to rush into gunfire to prevent mass murder.  We expect them to always make the correct decision in seconds.  Forbes determined that Honolulu Police Department is the worst department in the United States to be a cop.  We are going to have trouble recruiting new officers and retaining the ones we have.  When we do not have enough cops, the chances of Hawaii becoming Chicago grows exponentially.

To all those Quislings out there protesting today, I challenge you to join the police department.  If you can do better, join the police and serve.  Your talk is cheap.  Your protesting is cheaper.  Your signs calling police officers pigs and fascists are infuriating.  Service is immeasurable. Find your courage.  Change comes from within.  Join and help.
